My epilepsy journey started almost ten years ago. My daughter, Ellie, had her first seizure at 11 months old while we were on vacation. We initially thought it was just a febrile seizure, but it quickly became apparent that this was something different.
After numerous tests, Ellie was diagnosed with complex partial seizures thought to be from mesial temporal sclerosis. We battled with seizures and medications for four years and finally were referred for surgery just before Ellie Turned 5. During our pre-surgical testing, it was determined Ellie’s seizures originated from the temporal lobe but were probably caused by Focal Cortical Dysplasia.
On March 9, 2017, Ellie had a temporal lobectomy at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, NC. Her last seizure was on March 6, 2017. She is now ten years old and thriving. She is seizure and med free, and we are SO happy we chose surgery for our girl.
