Today, we are excited to share the launch of our new program: Advocacy University. More than a webinar or guide, this new school will take you on a deep dive to help you understand essential topics like individual education plans, 504 plans, transition IEPs, future planning, and more.
In recent years, we have been focusing on transition resources for our community, looking at what happens as your child becomes a legal adult, leaves the school system, enters the workforce, college, or a day program, and how to protect them when you are no longer able to. That’s why the first course in Advocacy University is Transition Roadmap for Youth with Neurological Conditions. It’s free, self-paced, and includes a rich curriculum with hours of instructional videos and coursework on a topic we know is important to you: how to help your child transition to adult life.
You can access the training at your convenience and work at your own pace. Once you have completed the entire curriculum, you will receive a certificate of completion and access to all curriculum materials.
This course is a supplement to our 100+ page guide Educational Transition After Epilepsy Surgery. It includes over ten hours of training modules covering all aspects of transition. In this series you will find the steps you need to take to build your child’s education transition plan, your child’s rights in the process, as well as resources to help you along the way. We also cover transition to adult health care, future planning, decision making and financial supports, among other topics.

Audrey Vernick is our Director of Patient and Family Advocacy. She is the parent of a child who had hemispherectomy for seizures caused by stroke. She holds a level 2 certification in Special Education Advocacy Training from the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates and is certified by The ARC in future planning. She also serves on the International League Against Epilepsy’s Social Work and Social Services Section.
